It goes like this.
Me on the boat, engine running, sat outside a lock whilst the wife is trying to open the gates to allow me in and there is any number of problems.
She cannot turn the manual key to empty the water out of the lock, or the lock gate is stuck, too heavy, or jammed. Something is in the lock stopping her opening the lock like a log, someone is being a twit as they thought they should go through first.
Or, I’m in the lock and waiting for the lock to empty and wanting to know how things are going, or she is filling the lock too fast or too slowly, the list goes on.
Now it sounds ideal for the little PMR radio sets doesn’t it?
Close range, easy to use, and reliable. Only we both need to keep our hands free to work mechanisms, hold ropes, control engines, etc.
Pah, easy peasy you’re thinking.
Use a hands free model, on VOX (voice operated), headset set like all the security guys wear, and for the really posh people who don’t like listening to wind noise, a throat mic.
What, you think we’re made of money?
Besides with what we both utter when things go wrong or our knuckles get hurt, or the damn thing just won’t move! If that VOX kicks in!
Sailors run screaming from bars, nuns faint, and policemen reach for their ticket book.
